ATLANTA, Ga. - The ASUN released its annual preseason baseball predictions with Jacksonville State picked to finish fourth among the 12 teams for the 2022 season, according to the coaches around the league.
The Gamecocks, who collected 102 points in the poll, are the highest ranked team among the six clubs in the ASUN West Division. Liberty, the 2021 defending regular season champion was chosen to repeat that feat in 2022. ASUN East Division members, Florida Gulf Coast and Stetson were slated to finish second and third respectively.
JSU is no stranger to high expectations in conference play as it was one of the perennial favorites to win the Ohio Valley Conference since joining that league in 2004. The Gamecocks finished the 2021 season a game under .500 and a 16-14 mark in the league. JSU returns to its roots in the ASUN as it participated in the league from 1996-2003.
The 2022 season is just a few weeks away from getting started and the excitement is building around the program with a solid 31-game hoke slate. Highlighting the action on Rudy Abbott Field at Jim Case Stadium is a three-game, season-opening series with Southeastern Conference member Kentucky on Feb. 18-20. Jax State will also host in-state rival South Alabama (March 11-13) in a three-game series the weekend prior to ASUN conference action begins. JSU will have home-and-home match ups with Auburn and Alabama.
The Gamecocks' return to the ASUN will feature home-and-home three-game series with each team in the ASUN West Division. The first weekend of the league has JSU traveling to Nashville, Tennessee to face Lipscomb. Jax State's first ASUN home weekend will be against North Alabama March (25-27). Jax State's home weekends in April will be against Eastern Kentucky on April 1-3, hosting Bellarmine on Easter weekend (April 14-16) and Lipscomb the following weekend (April 22-24). JSU's lone weekend at home in May will be against Central Arkansas on May 13-15.
The 2022 ASUN Baseball Championship will be hosted by Florida Gulf Coast in Fort Myers, Fla. on May 25-28.
