JSU falls to UNA late; plays ASUN elimination game Thursday

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – For the second-straight day a walk-off home run decided Jacksonville State's ASUN Conference Tournament outcome, but this time it was a three-run shot for North Alabama for a 6-3 decision that sends JSU into an elimination contest on Thursday.

The No. 4 seed Lions (38-16) tied the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the fifth on a Harley Stokes solo homer, and would strike again in the home half of the seventh with three runs off the bat of Emma Broadfoot.

The fifth-seeded Gamecocks (31-23) sent ASUN Freshman of the Year Kat Carter back to the circle on Wednesday where the Spring Hill, Tenn., product allowed just one earned run through three innings. Fellow freshman Sarah Currie, Tuesday's winner, took the loss following the walk-off after 3.1 innings of relief.

After UNA struck early for a run in the first inning, junior Brantly Bonds pushed JSU ahead in the top of the second with her sixth home run of the season, which scored Camryn McLemore to make it 2-1. The Lions had a chance to tie in the home half of the frame with a runner at third, but a grounder to McLemore at shortstop was thrown back home to Perkins in time for a run-saving tag at the plate. UNA ultimately evened things up in the fourth on a sacrifice fly out to right field.

Just as they did in the second, the Gamecocks rebounded quickly in the fifth on a leadoff triple from Savannah Sudduth. A single by Sidney Wagnon scored Sudduth to make it 3-2 for a brief period until Stokes' tying shot in the bottom of the inning.

With the setback, JSU falls into the elimination bracket of the ASUN Championship and will have to work its way back to reach Saturday's title contest. The Gamecocks will face Kennesaw State, who fell to North Florida, at 3 p.m. ET on Thursday from UNF's Harmond Stadium. No further matchups will take place at Jacksonville University for the remainder of the 2022 ASUN Championship. The winner of Thursday's win-or-go-home game against the Owls will advance to Friday.
