GIESSEN, Germany – The third senior member of Jacksonville State's NCAA Tournament team last season has signed his first professional contract with Jalen Gibbs joining the Giessen Pointers.
Â
Gibbs, a 6-foot-3 guard from Indian Head, Md., spent one season with the Gamecocks after arriving from Mount St. Mary's, but it was one for the record books. In addition to guiding Jax State to just its second Division I NCAA Tournament, Gibbs became one of the hottest shooters in the nation from beyond the arc. His 77 three-pointers last season are the third-most in a single season by a Gamecock. In November, he established JSU's Div. I program record for points in a single game when he scored 40 on the road at Elon.
Â
Following fellow seniors Kayne Henry and Darian Adams from the March Madness squad, Gibbs now moves his talents to the professional ranks with the Giessen Pointers in Germany Pro B. The Pro B is a tier of professional club basketball in Germany. The league is comprised of 24 teams, separated into a Northern and a Southern Division. Officially, the ProB is part of the Basketball Bundesliga, which consists of the two hierarchical leagues ProA and ProB. At the end of the league stage, the winning team of the playoffs in each division, qualify for the ProA.
Â
Should the Pointers move to ProA, Gibbs would be join the same league Henry signed with earlier this summer with the Kirchheim Knights.
Â
Along with Henry and Adams (Glasgow Rocks), Gibbs becomes just the latest Gamecock to sign professionally since the arrival of Ray Harper. That list includes Jason Burnell, who recently signed with Italy's Enel Brindisi for his fourth year in the Italian Lega Basket Serie A, as well as Christian Cunningham (Israel), Malcolm Drumwright (Georgia/Portugal), Erik Durham (Spain/Germany), Jacara Cross (Finland), Jamal Gregory (USA/Mexico) and Norbertas Giga, who's played the past three seasons in Lithuania.
