JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State women's golf team wrapped up a record-breaking fall semester in the classroom and is now gearing up for a busy competition schedule in the spring.
The Gamecocks posted a program- and JSU Athletics-record 3.91 grade point average in the fall semester that saw six golfers post a perfect 4.0 GPA. Their spring schedule was also recently announced and features five tournaments before the ASUN Championship in mid-April.
Jax State placed six student-athletes on the President's List and two more on the Dean's List to lead all of Jax State's 17 sports with what is believed to be the best single-team semester GPA ever by a Gamecock team.
"I am so proud of this team's commitment and discipline in the classroom in the Fall," head coach Robbie Fields said. "For a lot of them it was their first time away from home and a major adjustment to the daily grind of a college student-athlete. They adjusted hard and conquered the challenges they faced, which is exciting for Nicole (Page, assistant coach) and me as coaches."
What was a young Gamecock roster in the fall will turn its focus to the spring schedule with some valuable experience under their belts. They open with three tournaments in the state of Florida before moving north as the weather warms up in late March.
The spring will start with Florida Atlantic's The Atlantic Invitational at Indian Springs CC in Boynton Beach, Fla. On Feb. 20-21. The Gamecocks will return to the Sunshine State for the UNF Collegiate at the Jacksonville Golf & Country Club on March 6-7 and will then play in the FGCU Spring Break Shootout at Lake Jovita Golf Club in Dade City on March 13-14.
They will wrap up the month of March at the Georgia State Spring Invitational in Johns Creek, Ga., on March 27-28 at Rivermont Golf Club before wrapping up the regular season at East Carolina's Ironwood Invitational on April 3-4. That final tune up before the ASUN Championship will be played at the Ironwood Golf & Country Club in Greenville, N.C., and will be somewhat of a Homecoming for Fields, who served as the Pirates' assistant coach for three years before taking the reins at Jax State.
"We have a lot of great opportunities to compete this Spring," Fields said. "The first three events will not only be great to play because of the weather, but also for the variety of competition we will face. The UNF Collegiate and Georgia State Spring Invitational are both familiar events for Claire and Paula, so having some experience on those courses will be nice. I am also excited to return to Greenville for a tournament and golf course I have a lot of experience at and where I have experienced a win before."
The ASUN Championship will be as close to a home tournament as the Gamecocks will get in the 2022-23 season. It will be played at Hampton Cove on the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail in Owens Cross Roads, Ala., just south of Huntsville. The 54-hole event will be played over three days from April 16-18, with the winner receiving the ASUN's automatic bid into the NCAA Championship.
"We are lucky to have the ASUN Championship played on another Robert Trent Jones course that is close to home and plan on using our experience at Silver Lakes to our advantage," Fields added. "It is a little later start than normal, but we are all chomping at the bit to get started!"
