DALLAS – Jacksonville State's Jaylen "J-Rock" Swain has been tabbed Conference USA's Defensive Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday.
Swain led the Gamecocks to a dominant 41-16 victory over FIU last weekend to improve Jax State to 7-2 on the season and 5-1 in CUSA play. Swain's defense suffocated the Panthers' attack, limiting FIU to just 12 first downs and 31 yards rushing on the night. The Oxford, Alabama, native recorded six tackles, three of which went for a loss of 12 yards. In addition to two sacks, he had another quarterback hurry and recovered a fumble he then returned for seven yards.
Swain becomes the third Gamecock to receive CUSA's Defensive Player of the Week honors this season after
Jeremiah Harris and
Chris Hardie. No other school has more than two honorees this season.
Jax State steps back out of conference this weekend traveling to Columbia, S.C. to face South Carolina at 11 a.m. CT on ESPNU. The Gamecocks then close out the regular season with league matchups versus Louisiana Tech (Nov. 18) and at New Mexico State (Nov. 25).
