Four Gamecocks Score Double Digits in 77-62 Road Win at UTSA

SAN ANTONIO – Jax State picked up its first road win of the season Friday afternoon with a 77-62 victory over UTSA.

Behind a 46-point second-half, the Gamecocks (2-4) pulled away from the host Roadrunners (2-4) to claim the first-ever meeting between the two schools. Four Gamecocks finished in double figures led by Quincy Clark and KyKy Tandy with 16. Ivan Reynolds had a career day with 13, followed by season-high 12 points from Marcellus Brigham Jr.

Starting the fifth different starting lineup in six games, the Gamecocks went back-and-forth with UTSA early before leading the final 36 minutes of action. Redshirt-sophomore Mason Nicholson tied the game at eight, and then gave Jax State the lead on two of his four buckets of the day. The Gary. Ind., native, matched his career-high for the second time this season with eight points to go along with three rebounds.

Both squads shot an identical 5-for-18 from beyond the arc, and in the closing minutes of the first half both were still searching for their first made three-pointer. Reynolds connected first for Jax State to make it a 31-23 Jax State lead, but the Roadrunners would match with one of their own for a five-point game at intermission.

UTSA pulled within two to open the second half, but that would be as close as the home team came to tying it back up as Andres Burney's layup sparked a 6-0 run for Jax State. Midway through the period, Brigham Jr. poked away a loose ball from UTSA and tossed ahead to a streaking Reynolds for a two-handed flush that pushed the Gamecock lead to double digits for the first time.

Tandy and Clark sank key triples down the stretch to fend off Roadrunner rallies as the Gamecocks came away with the program's first Division I win over a team from Texas.

Head coach Ray Harper remains perfect against UTSA, running his record to 3-0 versus the Roadrunners dating back to his time at Western Kentucky.

The Gamecocks now prepare for a rematch with UIW on Sunday afternoon after the 67-66 setback on Wednesday night.
