Jax State Starts Fast In Opening Indoor Meet of the Season

BIRMINGHAM – Cliché aside, Jax State hit the ground running with the opening meet of the indoor track and field season with weekend at Birmingam Southern's Ice Breaker Invitational.
The Gamecocks set six top-10 program marks with a roster comprised of veterans and newcomers alike.
On the track, freshman Emma Drinkard set a lifetime best for the indoor 400-meter event. Her 11th-place 59.31, was just behind junior Hailey Tucker's new 58.23 PR. Tucker scored new a lifetime bests in both the indoor 200 and 400. Another new best came in the 60-meter hurdles where Carolina Minozzi turned in a 9.08 in the semifinals.
For distance, Bethelhem Manzano Jimeno and Lindsay Fletcher, fresh off strong cross country seasons, recorded new bests in the mile event each finishing in the top 10 led by Jimeno's third-place 4:59.8.
In the pole vault, Savannah Yates new lifetime best height of 11-feet-07.75-inches led teammate Lennon Ibsen as the Gamecock duo each posted top 10 finished. The highest mark of the day came when freshman Jadyn Bonds finished runner-up in the high jump clearing 5'05".
In addition to Bonds and Drinkand, Jax State saw Gamecock debuts from Jailah Loving (sprints), Amiyah Johnson (sprints), Chaci Whitfield (hurdles), Amber Bailey (800m), and Sky White (long jump). Loving (7.91) and Johnson's (7.93) opening day times in the 60-meter dash were better than any 60-meter dash finish by a Gamecock all of last season.
"There was a lot of excitement for the start of indoor season, several really strong marks for the opener," said head coach Jeremy Provence. "We are happy with the progress. When comparing where we are now verses last year, we are much improved as a team."
The Gamecocks will compete in a multis invite next weekend, before resuming the season on Jan. 19 in Nashville, Tenn.
