SAINT LEO, Fla. – Three Gamecocks tallied their first victories of 2023 in the first day of a Spring Break trip across Florida for Jacksonville State beach volleyball. The Gamecocks fell 4-0 to the hosts to start the Saint Leo University Dual before rallying to force a 2-2 tie against the State College of Florida.

Jax State (0-5-1) was swept in their four flights against Saint Leo (12-6). A veteran Lions squad jumped on top early and never looked back, posting four two-set wins in a sweep victory at the Saint Leo Beach Volleyball Courts.

Fortunately for the Gamecocks, they were able to respond with a pair of impressive wins against SCF (0-9-1). After Gracie Danzinger and Luci Wilkinson dropped a very tight two-set battle in the top flight, no. 2 pair Isabelle Fuell and Brooklyn Schiffli earned a thrilling 21-13, 17-21, 15-8, triumph to tie the match. The Manatees claimed another victory on court three before Kiara Amigon and Parker Phenicie cruised to a 21-8, 21-19, result in the final match.

Tuesday's decisions marked the first victories of the year for Amigon, Phenicie, and Schiffli, and the first in the Jacksonville State careers of Amigon, a transfer from Marymount (Calif.), and Phenicie, a freshman from New Washington, Ohio. Schiffli earned six wins as a freshman last Spring and Fuell posted two in this month's Huntingdon Beach Bash.

Jax State returns to action on Wednesday morning with an exhibition versus Eckerd College. That showdown will begin at 8 a.m. CST in St. Petersburg, Fla. The Gamecocks will then head to Palatka, Fla., for a dual with St. Johns River State College on Thursday before playing four matches in the Jacksonville University Tournament on Friday and Saturday.
