Baseball Sweeps Bellarmine To Remain Unbeaten In ASUN

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Jacksonville State continued its hot start in ASUN conference play with a 10-0 win over Bellarmine to complete the weekend sweep in the Bluegrass State on Sunday afternoon at Knights Field.

The Gamecocks moved to 6-0 after the first two weekends of the league schedule with sweeps of Queens and BU. Jax State improved to 13-11 overall and will return to action on Tuesday afternoon at UAB. Jax State returns to Rudy Abbott Field at Jim Case Stadium next weekend against Kennesaw State. Sunday's seven-inning run-rule decision is JSU's 11th consecutive win over a conference foe dating back to the last five games of last season. The Knights fell to 7-17 overall and 2-4 in the ASUN.

After Jax State pounded out 23 runs on 29 hits in a Saturday sweep of the Knights, it continued the offensive onslaught against BU pitching with a five-run first inning to set the tone for the rest of the day. The Gamecocks put together five of their 14 hits in the first at bat, highlighted by two-out double by freshman Will Fincher.

That run support was all freshman Eli Zielinski needed to work with on the mound. He scattered four hits in six innings of work and tallied seven strikeouts to earn his fifth win of the season as a Sunday starter for JSU.

While Zielinski was working with a cushion, the offense kept adding run support with a single run in the fourth and a three-run fifth inning. Junior Havon Hernandez had an RBI single in the fourth. After two weeks of league play, Hernandez has 15 hits in six ASUN games.

JSU's three-run frame in the fifth was highlighted by freshman Bear Madliak's first home run as a Gamecock. All three runs came with two outs in the inning after a two-out double by freshman Michael Dallas left the door open for a big inning. Madliak greeted BU's first reliever out of the bullpen with a two-run blast to centerfield. The Carrollton, Georgia native led the Gamecocks with three hits on Sunday.

In his second game back since an injury in the opening weekend of the season at Georgia, junior Derrick Jackson, Jr. added two more hits after compiling four in Saturday's nightcap. Junior Mason Maners extended his on0base streak with a single in his second plate appearance and has now reached base in 36 consecutive games. He also extended a hitting streak against ASUN foes to 15 games.

Tuesday's UAB contest will get started at 4 p.m. at Young Memorial Field. The game will be carried on the Gamecock Sports Network.
