JACKSONVILLE – Jax State found its way past a Georgia State program that has routinely tripped up in the Gamecocks in recent years, with a 3-1 home victory on Wednesday night.
Behind another dominant seven innings from freshman
Jaliyah Holmes, the Gamecocks (20-9) reeled off their ninth-straight win during the midweek matchup. The Panthers fall to 13-19 overall, and suffer the first setback to JSU since 2007.
Holmes allowed the leadoff hitter to reach on a walk to open the game, who later scored on a two-out double, but that would be all GSU scratched across the plate for the evening. The Panthers saw runners reach scoring position in the third, fourth, fifth and sixth innings, but Holmes seven strikeouts and eight other groundouts stymied additional runs each time.
GSU's first-inning run held the lead until the bottom of the third. The Gamecocks finished with just five hits total, and
Emma Jones accounted for a pair of those on a 2-for-2 night at the plate. After getting on in the third, Jones raced home for the tying run all the way from first on a deep double off the bat of
Lindsey Richardson. A follow-up double by
Holly Stewart shortly after sent Richardson home for the go-ahead run.
Jones found her way aboard again in the fifth by way of a hit-by-pitch. The speedster promptly swiped second base for the second time of the night, and moved to third on a fly-out from Richardson. Another deep shot to center allowed Jones to score on
Linley Tubbs' sacrifice fly and pad an insurance run behind Holmes' efforts in the circle.
With the win, Holmes moved to 9-3 during her debut season. Her complete game this time solidified Jax State's ninth-straight win for the longest streak since 2017.
The Gamecocks look to continue the winning ways and hot start to ASUN action on Saturday with a doubleheader versus North Florida beginning at 1 p.m. from University Field. The two teams will conclude the thiee-game series on Sunday afternoon with a single game at 1 p.m.
