JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – North Florida bounced-back from a series-opening loss on Thursday to claim a 5-3 decision over Jacksonville State on Friday night at Harmon Stadium.
The Ospreys forced a second consecutive rubber match to decide an ASUN series for the Gamecocks. Due to the weather forecast, it will be a quick turnaround for both clubs with an early start. First pitch is set for 10:05 a.m. CST. The game will be streamed on UNF's SWOOPLife Live and carried on the Gamecock Sports Network.
Junior
Javon Hernandez provided all three of Jax State's run in the loss with a two-run home run in his first at bat in the opening frame and add an RBI single in the seventh inning. Hernandez, who ranks second in the league in batting average entering the day, bolstered his average to .407 overall with his sixth three-hit ASUN contest of the season and has multiple hits in nine-of-the-11 conference outings. He was a triple shy of hitting for the cycle after starting the third inning with a leadoff double. Hernandez was robbed of a fourth hit as a diving play in centerfield to end the game with a pair of runners on base.
It was a contest of missed opportunity for the Gamecocks as they stranded eight base runners throughout the game and hit into a pair of double plays. After Hernandez' two-run home run, UNF answered with a pair of runs with two outs in its first plate appearance. The Ospreys took advantage of a leadoff walk to break up a 2-2 deadlock in the fifth inning. A two-out single by Cade Reich gave UNF a lead it nursed the rest of the way. UNF expanded the lead with a two-run sixth, which was also aided by a one-out walk by JSU.
Sophomore
Tanner Jones was saddled with the loss after 5.1 innings of work and was touched for all of UNF's eight hits on the night. Jax State's trio out of the bullpen of
Will Baker,
Sam Maynard and
Josh Sibley finished out the contest without allowing an Osprey hit.
Senior
Carson Crowe was the other Gamecocks to have multiple hits as he had two singles. Freshman
Bear Madliak singled to start the game ahead of Hernandez' home run. Freshman
Caleb Johnson legged out a double in the loss.
