LEXINGTON, Ky. – The United States Marine Corps and the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) announced on Thursday afternoon that Jacksonville State's volleyball and beach volleyball programs earned the USMC/AVCA Team Academic Award for the 2022-23 season.
1,333 collegiate and high school teams notched the recognition after shining on the courts and in the classroom this past year. The award, initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors volleyball teams that maintain a year-long grade point average of 3.3. Both Gamecock programs passed that milestone with flying colors, achieving a mark of 3.47 in 2022-23.
This is not the season's only academic achievement for Jax State volleyball. Fifth year standout Lena Kindermann was deemed an ASUN All-Academic performer and earned a CSC Academic All-America honor, the first in program history, last Fall. In addition, rising junior Brooklyn Schiffli collected a pair of awards during beach volleyball season, being named a CUSA All-Academic First Teamer before being selected as the conference's Beach Volleyball Scholar Athlete in mid-June.
Jacksonville State will strive for more success competitively and academically as they focus on a change-filled 2023-24 season. The indoor and beach programs will be coached by first-year head coach Derek Schroeder and his staff in their first year as a member of Conference USA, where the Gamecocks will face off against the likes of Florida International, Liberty, Louisiana Tech, Middle Tennessee, New Mexico State, Sam Houston, UTEP, and Western Kentucky.
