Gamecocks Blank Alcorn State on Friday Night

JACKSONVILLE – Jacksonville State registered a pair of goals in each half to claim its third home win of the season with a 4-0 win over Alcorn State on Friday night at the Jax State Soccer Complex.

The Gamecocks moved to 3-2 on the season and shook off its first road setbacks last week with the win over the Southwestern Athletic Conference program. The Lady Braves dropped to 0-4 on the season. Jax State will have a quick turnaround with a short trip to Chattanooga on Sunday afternoon. The contest with the Mocs is set for 12 p.m. CT.

It didn't take long for the Gamecocks to shed the 180 minutes last weekend without a goal as sophomore Naroa Domenech tallied her fourth goal of the season with just under two minutes into the contest. Jax State had its second goal of the night within the first 10 minutes of the match after junior Laleh Lonteen drilled her fifth goal of the season in the eighth minute. Junior Ella Owen generated the first scoring play, while Domenech was credited with her first assist as a Gamecock.

Jax State extended the lead with a pair of penalty kick goals by junior Kylie Wells. It was her third PK goal of the season. Wells netted her first goal off of a penalty in the 66th minute and connected on the second one in the 75th minute.

The Gamecocks controlled the match from opening kick and held the Lady Braves without a shot attempt for the full 90 minutes. Jax State finished with 25 total shots on the night, including 16 on-goal chances. Owen and Wells combined for eight shots in the win as the duo shared game-high shot totals. A total of 13 different Gamecocks had shot attempts in the shutout.

"It was a good week of training and the girls refocused after a tough weekend last week and we worked really hard on some of the elements of the game and they delivered on those tonight. I am disappointed that we did not score more goals," said head coach Sean Fraser.

Sophomore goalkeeper Bailey Dean turned in her second shutout of the season with a clean worksheet after a light workload with no shot attempts by ASU.

"We are going to recover tomorrow and look at some video to get ready for Sunday," added Fraser.

The Mocs enter Sunday's regional showdown riding a three-match winning streak after dropping the season opener to Vanderbilt. The match will be streamed on ESPN+
