Schiffli Reaches Milestone, Williams Sets Record in Road Loss

LYNCHBURG, VA. – The Gamecocks fell in five sets in the second match of the weekend to Liberty. Although the outcome was not what Jax State would have wanted, there were achievements worth celebrating for Brooklyn Schiffli and Kayla Williams.

The game was another hard-fought battle throughout. Liberty (10-6, 4-0) took the first set 25-21 before Jax State (7-10, 0-4) responded with a dominate 25-12 set two win. Liberty won the third 25-22. The Gamecocks forced a fifth set with a back and forth set four victory that ended at 28-26. The Flames clinched the match with a 15-12 win in the fifth.

"I am disappointed today," head coach Derek Schroeder said. "We didn't really decide to compete to our standard until the late timeout in the fourth set and then we played some good volleyball. That's just not going to be good enough on the road in a tough arena. I am happy for Brooklyn, just sorry it had to come in a loss. Hopefully, we can all giver her a reason to celebrate this week."

Schiffli, the Gamecocks' senior libero, reached the 1,000-dig mark in Saturday's match. Entering the weekend, Schiffli was only 20 away from reaching the achievement. After 12 digs on Friday, Schiffli's 19 dig performance Saturday easily pushed her past the mark to have her sitting with 1,011 digs in her career. Her milestone makes her the 14th Jax State player to make it to the 1,000-dig club.

Williams had her best game of her Jax State tenure on Saturday as she set career highs in single-game kills, hit percentage, and service aces. She ended the match with 29 kills on a .460 hit percentage and five aces. Her 29 kills broke the Liberty Arena single-game kill record previously held by Kennesaw State's Lauren Chastang at 22.

Jax State amassed 58 kills, 11 service aces, 55 assists, and 63 digs. Other impressive performances include Ellie Garrett's double-double with 48 assists and 11 digs. Caty Havekost picked up where she left off Friday with 11 kills and Luci Wilkinson contributed 10 digs on the backrow.

The Gamecocks will welcome rival Kennesaw State to Pete Mathews Coliseum Tuesday and Wednesday for a pair of midweek CUSA matches. The games will be streaming on ESPN+, live stats will be available at JaxStateSports.com, and admission to all home volleyball matches are free.
