JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State Gamecocks were swept by Kennesaw State Tuesday evening at home.
The Owls (5-11, 2-3) defeated the Gamecocks (7-11, 0-5) by scores of 28-26 in the first, 25-19 in the second, and 25-20 in the third. Jax State had 23 kills, 13 blocks, 22 assists, 32 digs, and eight service aces in the match.
"Nothing went our way," head coach
Derek Schroeder said. "It's really starting to be a little bit more of a mental and physical toughness thing. We had a rough week of practice where people just didn't want to do things this week, and those are the people that struggled in play."
Ellie Garrett stood out most for the Gamecocks as she has consistently done all season. Garrett had 19 assists, three digs, three blocks, two aces, and a kill.
Hana Aiana and
Kayla Williams tied for a team-best seven kills.
Luci Wilkinson led the Gamecocks in digs with nine, followed by
Brooklyn Schiffli with eight.
"
Ellie Garrett played really well, and she was in there getting extra blocking reps, she was getting extra defensive reps, and she was in there getting extra serving reps," Schroeder added. "She happened to play well this week. It's not a coincidence."
Jax State will take on Kennesaw at home again on Wednesday at 2 p.m. The match will be streaming on ESPN+, live stats will be available at JaxStateSports.com, and admission to all Jax State home volleyball matches are free.
