Gamecocks Hit Record Number of Threes in Monday's Home Win

JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State Gamecocks dominated the Sewanee Tigers in Monday's home matchup 114-47. The 114 points are the most the Gamecocks have scored in a regular season game since a 114-33 win over Shorter in Nov. of 2022. Jax State improved to 4-1 on the year while Sewanee drops to 2-5.
 
The Gamecocks knocked in 20 three-pointers which sets a team record. The highest number of threes the Gamecocks had previously made was 16 against Stillman on Nov. 15, 2017. The Gamecocks were 20-49 from range for 40.8% on the game. The Gamecocks also outrebounded the Tigers 63-27.
 
"When you're playing a Division III team like this, we should expect to have a result that is something that we're happy with," head coach Rick Pietri said. "That said, there's still some things that after playing the game, there's still some things that we need to address. Overall, in terms of we're looking to get, and I thought the kids from Sewanee competed, and yet our team was still able to execute some things that we want them to moving forward. Overall, today was a positive."
 
Six Gamecocks reached double digit scoring. Mya Barnes led the way with 17 points followed by Clara Gonzalez Planella with 16. Asia Barclay had 14 points, Maria Sanchez Ponce and Eden Sample had 13, and Bre'Anna Rhodes added 12, respectively. 11 of the 12 Gamecocks on the roster scored at least once in the win.
 
Barclay had a double-double as she pulled down 13 rebounds. Rhodes nearly reached a double-double, adding eight rebounds. Elsie Harris ran the offense effectively as she accumulated a team-best six assists. Planella had the next highest number of assists with five.
 
The Gamecocks got off to a rough start as Sewanee jumped out to a 6-0 lead early in the opening quarter. Jax State was shooting only 17% from the field before the media timeout in the first. The Gamecocks finally got their offense rolling to lead 23-15 after the first and never looked back.
 
In the second quarter, Jax State made 56.5% of their field goal attempts and knocked down 5-11 shots from three. The second quarter saw Jax State outscore Sewanee 32-9 and enter the halftime intermission leading 55-24.
 
Coming out of the break, the Gamecocks kept their foot on the pedal as they continued to outscore the Tigers with a 31-11 third period. The Gamecocks were leading the third 86-35 thanks to making 47.6% of their shots, 46.2% of their threes, and holding Sewanee to 6.3% shooting from the field and 10% shooting from the arc.
 
The Gamecocks eventually got their largest lead of the contest, 70 points, with 1:53 left in the fourth quarter. Jax State shot 55% from the field and made 6-12 three-pointers in the final period.
