JACKSONVILLE – With a lot still on the line for postseason seeding, Jax State will host New Mexico State for Senior Day on Saturday.
The final home contest of the 2023-24 season is set to tip-off at 4:00 broadcasting on ESPN+. Fans are encouraged to arrive early as seniors
Juwan Perdue and
Matt Mayers will be recognized in a brief pregame ceremony.
The Gamecocks (14-15, 6-8 CUSA) are looking to leave Pete Mathews Coliseum on a high note with a win. The current league standings are jumbled to the point where fourth-through-ninth are still undetermined. Jax State enters a game ahead of the visiting Aggies (11-18, 5-9 CUSA), but a NMSU win would give them any tiebreaker. Teams are trying to avoid having to play in the opening night 8 vs 9 matchup in the Conference USA Tournament on March 13.
Despite the loss, graduate
KyKy Tandy continued his sensational season on Thursday evening with a team-high 22 points against UTEP. The Hopkinsville, Ky., native became the third Gamecock in the program's Division I era to surpass 500 points in a season and sits just 30 behind Jason Burnell's 550-point season in 2018-19.
Likewise making moves up a Jax State record list, senior
Juwan Perdue passed Kayne Henry on Thursday and moved into a tie for fourth with Amadou Mbodji for Div. I career rebounds with 528.
But the number the Gamecocks most want to see on Saturday is a final score greater than that of New Mexico State. The Aggies held on late at home in early February to top Jax State 67-65 in front of a crowd of 11,000 in Las Cruces, N.M. On Thursday, the Gamecocks aim to return the favor on Saturday and in the process bolster their postseason seeding.
The Gamecocks will finish the regular season next week in Huntsville, Texas at Sam Houston on March 9. Jax State will then take part in its first Conference USA Tournament the following week from Huntsville, Ala., March 13-16.
