Gamecocks Grab 4-3 Road Win Over Samford

HOMEWOOD, Ala. – Jax State held on for a 4-3 road win at Samford Wednesday night to pick up its 10th win of the season.

Freshman Amber Reed entered with two outs in the seventh and the tying run on second after the Bulldogs rallied late to bring the winning run to the plate. After pitching around Olivia Shaw, she got Katie Campbell to fly out to left to seal the win and pick up her first career save.

Prior to the seventh, Jax State (10-15) was in control throughout the afternoon with junior Kat Carter in the circle. Through five innings she allowed just two hits and a walk. With Carter cruising, the Gamecock offense built a 4-0 lead that should have been much larger had a small village not been stranded on the bases. Jax State left 13 runners aboard, an error that proved costly as Samford worked its way back into the game late.

Carter ran into trouble to begin the sixth, signaling the relief appearance of MacKinley Portillo. The Bulldogs scraped together one in the sixth, and then a two-out, two-RBI double in the bottom of the seventh made it a one-run affair which sent Reed into action.

Lindsey Richardson was the only Gamecock with multiple hits as she drove in two runs. Kenzie Nicholson was also responsible for an RBI as she reached base twice and came around to score once.

The Gamecocks head to Lynchburg, Va., this weekend to open Conference USA play.
