DADE CITY, Fla. – The Jacksonville State women's golf team's next tournament has a fitting name – The Spring Break Shootout.
Opening Spring Break week at Jax State, the Gamecocks head south to the event hosted by Western Kentucky at Lake Jovita Golf Club. They will compete against 14 teams in the 54-hole event that will play over two days on the par-71, 6,056-yard South Course.
The tournament will start with 36 holes on Monday, followed by the final 18 holes on Tuesday morning. Monday's play will begin with a shotgun start at 8:45 a.m. ET, with Jax State paired with Butler and Seminole State.
Jax State will begin play with a lineup that features three freshmen at the top and two true freshmen in the top two spots. Jinger Heath will start in the No. 1 spot for head coach Robbie Heath on Monday, Heath, a native of Decatur, Ala., has been the Gamecocks' most consistent player throughout the season and enters the week with a 368-145-19 record against her opposition.
Heath's 73.8 adjusted scoring average is just ahead of the No. 2 player in this week's lineup, Ashley Stevenson. A native of Fontainebleau, France, Stevenson is coming off of the best performance of her collegiate career, a runner-up finish at Jax State's Chris Banister Golf Classic a week ago. She was named the CUSA Golfer of the Week last week for her efforts.
Redshirt Freshman Rachel Camp will play I the No. 3 spot for Jax State in Dade City. The Peachtree City, Ga., native is coming off her first career Top-10 finish after claiming ninth at the Chris Banister. She has been solid in the spring season, posting two Top-20 finishes in her last three starts.
Junior Paula Perez Cubinas will tee off in the No. 4 spot for Jax State this week. The Girona, Spain, native is the veteran on Fields' roster, playing in her third season and one of just two players with any collegiate experience before the start of this season.
That other experienced player – sophomore Ebby Somers – will round out the Jax State lineup at the Spring Break Shootout. The Valdosta, Ga., native is looking to bounce back after a tough Chris Banister that saw her miss the final round due to illness.
Competing as an individual for Jax State in the tournament will be redshirt freshman Sandra Menes, who will be making her Jax State debut. The Bergen, Norway, native transferred in from Georgia Southern between semesters and has been sidelined by an injury up until this week.
Entering the week at No. 127 in the nation, the Gamecocks are the sixth-highest rated team in the field. Conference USA foe Western Kentucky (No. 70) is the highest ranked, followed closely by Chattanooga (No. 75). North Florida (No. 86), James Madison (No. 93) and Xavier (No. 110) are the only others ranked higher than Jax State, offering opportunities for the Gamecocks to climb with a solid week.
Also in the field are Florida Gulf Coast (133), Memphis (146), Troy (162), Stetson (179), Toledo (182), Butler (199), Akron (200), St. John's (210) and Seminole State.
