New Mexico State Claims Friday's Series Opener

JACKSONVILLE – Jacksonville State dropped the opening game of a key Conference USA series to New Mexico State, 8-4, on Friday night at Rudy Abbott Field at Jim Case Stadium.

The Gamecocks' returned to CUSA play after a weekend off as the weekend series with the Aggies began the second half of the CUSA slate as teams start to battle for the eight spots in the conference tournament in late May. NM State improved to 18-23 on the season and moved to 5-11 in the league. Jax State fell to to 14-25 overall and 3-10 in CUSA.

NM State broke up a 1-1 deadlock in the fourth inning with three runs on three hits and a pair of critical miscues by the Gamecocks in the field. The Aggies took command of the contest with another big inning with three two-out runs. NM State added its final run of the night in the sixth without recording a hit.

After the Aggies opened the game with a solo blast in the first inning, the Gamecocks matched them on senior Derrick Jackson, Jr.'s opposite field home run. It was the 12th of the season for Jackson, moving him to the top spot on the club's home run list. Jackson's blast was the 49th of the season for Jax State, which moves the club one home run closer to matching the 2012 club that had 50-plus home runs on the season. Jackson tacked on a second RBI with a run-scoring double in the eighth.

Jax State had NM State's reliever on the ropes in the fifth inning for a big inning, but Trey Meza limited the damage to a pair of runs after back-to-back strikeouts to end the Gamecocks' threat to erase the deficit. Meza finished the final five innings for the Aggies and finished with eight strikeouts and scattering five Jax State hits.

Junior Brennen Norton was the other Gamecock to have multiple hits in the game with a pair of singles at the leadoff spot. Norton also drove in a run in the fifth inning. Freshman Gave Young recorded an RBI single in the setback.

The Gamecocks will look to even the series on Saturday at 6 p.m. Tickets are available online at JaxStateSports.com. The game will be streamed on ESPN+ and carried on the Gamecock Sports Network.
