ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The Jacksonville State soccer team dropped its second road match of the season on Thursday after UNC Asheville rallied from a 1-0 deficit to claim a 2-1 win at Greenwood Field.
The Gamecocks dropped to level on the season at 2-2, while the Bulldogs picked up their first win of the season (1-3).
UNCA's come-from-behind decision was capped off by a pair of second half goals within a 10-minute span of the half. The Bulldogs equalized in the 62nd minute with a goal from Karlee Benz. UNCA's Ava Bjorkman-Tracy turned in the eventual game winner in the 73rd minute.
Jax State got off to a fast start with the initial match of the contest off the foot of junior
Lea Monteiro in the eighth minute, Monteiro, a transfer from Eastern Florida State College, recorded her first goal in a Jax State kit off an assist by junior
Nanaka Inaba. The Sunto-Gun, Japan native tallied her first assist as a Gamecock. The transfer from Cowley College led the Gamecocks in shots with three in the setback.
"We started the game well and grabbed the lead, but never capitalized on it," said head coach Sean Fraser. "I don't think we had enough energy in possession to create enough attacking threat and that is what we need to focus on."
Jax State held a 9-8 advantage in shots. Both clubs had five opportunities each in the second half.
The Gamecocks will open the month of September on Sunday with their first match on the home pitch since opening night on August 15. Jax State will face rival Chattanooga at the Jax State Soccer Complex. Kick off is set for 6 p.m. Admission is free to all home matches. The match will be streamed on ESPN+
