LAFAYATTE, LA. – Jacksonville State lost for a second consecutive time in the Ragin' Cajuns Classic Friday afternoon to Southeastern Louisiana. The Lions took down the Gamecocks in three sets.
The Gamecocks (7-5) struggled out the gates losing to Southeastern (8-4) 25-14 in the opening set of the match. It was more of the same in the second set as the Lions defeated Jax State 25-13. In the third, Jax State jumped out to a 13-8 lead before Southeastern stormed back and clinched the match 25-22.
"Southeastern Louisiana is a very strong team and has been winning for many years now," head coach
Derek Schroeder said. "It was good to test ourselves against them."
Jax State was held to 34 kills total in large part due to the stingy Lions defense. The Gamecocks also tallied 37 digs and 31 assists.
"We had lost our way a little over the last few days and a strong SELU team helped us find some high-end execution again," Schroeder added. "In the third set, we served much more effectively and became much more aggressive and affective in our offense."
Caty Havekost paced the Gamecocks with nine kills, followed closely by
Kayla Williams with seven. Williams also added six digs.
Ellie Garrett had a team-best 22 assists and added six digs.
Brooklyn Schiffli led Jax State with 11 digs.
Jax State will conclude the Ragin' Cajuns Classic Saturday at 11 a.m. against Florida A&M who was also swept by Southeastern in the match prior to Jax State's against the Lions.
