Dominant Second Half Propels Jax State Over Talladega

JACKSONVILLE – Jacksonville State exploded for five goals in the second half en route to a 6-0 win over Talladega College on Sunday night at the Jax State Soccer Complex.

The win moved the Gamecocks overall mark to 4-5-0 and wraps up Homecoming weekend on campus with a 1-1 mark after dropping the Conference USA opener on Thursday to Liberty. Jax State will quickly wrap up non-conference action with a rescheduled match with Mississippi Valley State on Monday afternoon at 4 p.m. on the MVSU campus in Itta Bena, Mississippi. The match was moved from Sept. 12 to Monday due to Hurricane Francine.

It took the first 35 minutes of the contest before the Gamecocks changed the tempo of the evening with the lone goal of the opening half coming in the 36th minute. Junior Nancy Almanza delivered the first of two goals on the night for her with an assist from Nanaka Inaba.

Jax State had a balance of shots in each half to finish with a 29-3 advantage against the Tornadoes. The Gamecocks posted 14 shots in the first half and 15 in the second half. All three of TC's looks at goal came in the final period.

"It feels good to win and the biggest lesson tonight is that when the opponent tries to slow the game down, we don't need to meet them at that destination and we need to speed the game up. I thought that was the problem in the first half and I thought the intensity was much better in the second half. We learned a lesson because we do have a young team and a group that is high in quality, but they are young in their Division I knowledge, so a game like tonight is important," said head coach Sean Fraser.

The intensity went up a level in the second half with the five goals, including a second goal from Almanza three minutes into the last 45 minutes. Graduate Tori Paul turned in a pair of goals within a span of a minute, while graduate Melissa Kuya Strobel added a goal. Junior Naroa Domenech came off the bench for a goal in the second half.

The combination of Poppy Bastock and Bailey Dean turned in a clean sheet against the Tornadoes. Inaba and Almanza paced the club with five shots each. Paul posted five points with an assist, while Domenech also assisted on a scoring play. Freshman Louis Niobe collected her first collegiate point with an assist.

Following Monday's action against MVSU, the Gamecocks will quickly return to CUSA play with home dates with Sam Houston on Thursday and Louisiana Tech on Sunday.

"We will modify training and use all the players that we can, we will manage it on Tuesday and Wednesday and will be ready for Thursday," added Fraser.

Thursday's match with the Bearkats is set for 7 p.m., while Sunday's matinee with LA Tech will get started at 1 p.m.
