ARLINGTON, Texas—Jax State ran its season win total to 40 with a perfect 5-0 day in Baker play at the Prairie View A&M Invitational.
During Friday's matches, the Gamecocks posted a total pinfall of 5,467, an average of 218.7 to lead the field. Jax State and North Carolina A&T were the only teams to win all five of their matches the first day. Sam Houston is second in the field in pinfall, 202 pins back.
In the opening match against LA Tech, the Gamecocks racked up a total of 1,230 pins in the five Baker games, highlighted by a 287 in the fourth. Jax State was perfect as a team through 10 shots in that game. The Gamecocks followed that up with a 1,040-1,024 win over Sam Houston.
Against the hosts, Jax State came away with a 1,082-942 victory to take a 101 pin lead over the field, coincidentally, against their next opponent; top-ranked Vanderbilt.
The Commodores led by 70 pins after two games, but the second-ranked Gamecocks stormed back with a 235-154 victory to take the lead. Vanderbilt left three frames open in the fourth and Jax State took advantage for a 206-193 win, then closed with a 248, going 3-for-3 on single-pin spares with nine strikes to win the series 1,046-976.
The day closed with a 1,069-851 win over Texas Southern with a best game of 249 in the opener, again picking up three single-pin spares.
Play resumes Saturday morning at 9:25 a.m. with five traditional matches against No. 3 Nebraska, No. 10 North Carolina A&T, No. 14 Duquesne, No. 5 Arkansas State, and No. 9 Maryville.
