Gamecocks Claim Second ITC Title

Jax State concluded its historic bowling season with another national championship on Saturday.

The NCAA Champions also claimed the US Bowling Congress Intercollegiate Team Championship by sweeping McKendree in a best-of-five Baker series on Saturday.

Jax State became the first team to win back-to-back ITC titles since West Texas State in 1988 and became the first team to win the NCAA and ITC championships in the same season since McKendree did in 2017.

The Gamecocks led qualifying, posting a total of 2363 pins in their first block of 12 Baker games and 2436 in their second block of 12 to lead the field by a total of 186 pins.

In the head-to-head double-elimination bracket, Jax State dropped just one game in three best-of-seven contests to reach the final of the Red Bracket against North Carolina A&T. The Aggies got out to a 2-1 lead, but the Gamecocks were able to storm back for a win in seven games, taking the deciding contest 217-186 as the Aggies went without a strike after the fifth frame.

In the championship against McKendree, both teams got off to a slow start, but the Gamecocks were able to have the best finish, taking a two-pin lead into the 10th which McKendree left open for a 164-151 win.

A run of five consecutive strikes in game two from the fourth through eighth frames was plenty for Jax State to take a 2-0 lead in the match with a 227-196 win. The Gamecocks then got 9+ on all but the fill ball in the third game for a 266-163 sweep.

In the Intercollegiate Singles Championship, freshmen Gianna Brandolino and Kaitlyn Stull both made the semifinals, but dropped their matches to make the final. Stull averaged nearly 221 to make the TV show, and Brandolino posted a 224.2 average.

CBS Sports Network will air the singles television show on Tuesday at 6 p.m. Central and the team TV show will air on Tuesday, May 5th at 6 p.m. Central.
