BIRMINGHAM, ALA. – Jacksonville State women's tennis got their first victory of the year in a dominate 6-1 match against Presbyterian Saturday afternoon. The win comes after a close 4-3 loss to Samford on Jan. 24.
Polina Ramenskaja shined both against Samford and Presbyterian. After getting a singles win against the Bulldogs on Friday, Ramenskaja defeated Presbyterian's Valentina De Sousa on Saturday. She defeated De Sousa 7-5 in the first set and 6-3 in the second. Ramenskaja also helped the Gamecocks clinch the doubles point against Presbyterian. The duo of Ramenskaja and
Lea Erenda downed De Sousa and Claudia Sanchez 6-2 on the first doubles court to finish.
Irene Artigas and
Aneka Patel clinched the doubles point after Ramenskaja and Erenda's win. Artigas and Patel beat Sofia Rodrigo Hidalgo and Elle Sceney 6-4. Although the point was clinched,
Anna Syrova and
Ella Tuomela fell in a tiebreaker to McKenzie Davis and Madison Dennett.
In singles play,
Anna Syrova got the first win for the Gamecocks in a 6-0, 6-3 triumph over Hidalgo. Artigas beat Presbyterian's Sanchez 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 for the third point of the afternoon going the way of the Red-and-White.
Zuzana Pavelekova defeated Dennett in straight sets by scores of 6-4, 7-5, Ramenskaja beat De Sousa 7-5, 6-3 in straight sets, and Patel downed Sceney in three sets, with the third going to a tiebreaker.
Presbyterian's lone point came when Davis defeated Erenda in straight sets.
Jax State is now 1-1 after the weekend in Birmingham.
The Gamecocks move on to face Eastern Kentucky on Friday, Feb. 7, at the Jax State Tennis Courts for the team's home opener. That match is set for a 1 p.m. start.
