ARLINGTON, Texas—Jax State finished as the runner-up in a loaded field at the Prairie View A&M Invitational, held at the International Training and Research Center.
The Gamecocks finished pool play with a 9-2 record and the top total pinfall of 11,852 after a 1,042-1,010 victory over Youngstown State in their final traditional match of the weekend.
Annalise OBryant had the high score of the match at 257, followed by
Anna Warkel's 235.
Warkel earned all-tournament team honors with an average of 228.
In the first match of bracket play, the Gamecocks rattled off three consecutive victories for a 4-2 win over North Carolina A&T. The Aggies took a 2-1 lead with six consecutive strikes, then picked up a split on their final shot of the game for the two-pin victory. Jax State answered by opening the fourth with eight straight strikes for a 254-210 win. The Gamecocks trailed by 19 pins at the halfway point of the fifth game, but threw six consecutive strikes to come away with a 240-219 win.
In the sixth, A&T missed a single-pin spare in the ninth to open the door for Jax State to come away with a 194-183 win to advance to the final against top-ranked Vanderbilt.
The Commodores swept the championship by the scores of 246-203, 228-201, 211-209, and 224-196.
Up next will be a trip to Lockport, Ill. in two weeks for the Flyer Classic hosted by Lewis University.
