Men’s Basketball Opens Homestand Against FIU Thursday

JACKSONVILLE, Ala. – Riding a four-game winning streak, Jax State looks to keep its momentum going into Thursday's contest against FIU in Jacksonville. The game against the Panthers represents the first of a four game homestand.

House Earns CUSA Honors
Jax State guard Quel'Ron House was selected as the Conference USA Freshman of the Week for his performance in two key wins last week. The Louisville native had 14 points, five assists, and four rebounds in a 73-66 win at UTEP on Thursday and added 11 points, five assists, and five rebounds in a 65-59 win at New Mexico State on Saturday.
 
Sweet Home of Basketball
As of Jan. 29, the Yellowhammer State features three conference frontrunners in Division I Men's Basketball. Jax State, Auburn and Samford all hold a share of first place in their respective conferences while South Alabama, Troy, Alabama, UAB and North Alabama all hold a share of second place in their respective conferences.
 
Jax State Handles Southwestern Road Swing
For the second consecutive weekend, Jax State closed out a sweep of its CUSA opponent, this time in a pair of road battles against UTEP and New Mexico State. The Gamecocks knocked off first place UTEP on Jan. 23, 73-66 in El Paso before taking down the Aggies 65-59 on Jan. 25 in Las Cruces.
 
Gamecocks Sweep CUSA Homestand
On Thursday, Jan. 16, Jax State defended home court and defeated Louisiana Tech 63-61 at the Pete Mathews Coliseum. The Gamecocks followed up the win with a 70-62 victory over Sam Houston on Saturday, Jan. 18. The Gamecocks came from behind to knock off the Bearkats in Jacksonville. 
 
Cleaning The Glass
Jax State ranks seventh in the NCAA in defensive rebounds per game with 29.05. Michael Houge (59th) and Mason Nicholson (89th) both rank in the top 100 in total rebounds per game with 8.3 and 7.9 respectively.
 
Stay off the Line
Jax State ranks third in the NCAA this season in fewest fouls per game, averaging just 12.5 per contest. The Gamecocks trail just Creighton (10.4) and Central Connecticut State (11.6) while sitting just ahead of Elon and fellow CUSA member Liberty. There have been six occasions this season where Jax State has fouled 10 or fewer times in a game, including on Jan. 16 when the Gamecocks fouled just six times against LA Tech, holding the Bulldogs to just two free throw attempts.
 
JP in the Ranks
Through 19 games this season, Jax State guard Jaron Pierre Jr. ranks in the top 10 nationally in both Total Points (10th) and PPG (6th). Pierre's 21.2 points per game lead Conference USA and put him among the premier scorers in college basketball.
