Men's Tennis Continued Impressive Fall Campaign At Mercer

MACON, Ga. – Jax State's men's tennis had their second consecutive great weekend of fall tennis in the Mercer Gridiron Classic last Friday, Oct. 3, through Sunday, Oct. 5.

"This tournament is always a grind," head coach Michael Helms said. "As a coach, you just hope everyone gets through it healthy, especially with regionals coming up this week at the University of Alabama. We've got a few guys a little banged up, but nothing a few days off won't take care of. The team continues to chip away and improve with every opportunity we have to compete."

Aman Dahiya and Timo De Visser beat Filip Kana and Ilian Borlee of Flagler 7-6 (7-5) in the doubles championship of Flight B on Sunday. Dahiya also took the singles title in Flight B1 on Sunday thanks to a 6-2, 2-0 win over Marcos Castellanos of North Georgia who retired early due to injury.

In Flight A1, David Krasner made it to the singles championship where he won set one 6-3 over Oscar Martinez of East Tennessee State. Martinez won the second set 7-5. In set three, Martinez led 2-1 before the match was abandoned due to weather conditions.

Flight B2 saw a similar story for Jax State's Lucius Soller. Soller took the first set 6-4 over Shingo Masuda of Mercer, before Masuda won the second set 6-4. Masuda was leading 2-1 in the third set, but that match was also abandoned due to rain.

As a whole, Jax State had a promising weekend as they went 16-8 in singles play over the three days of action and 9-4 in doubles. On Friday, the Gamecocks went 7-1 in both singles and doubles. On Saturday, Jax State finished 1-3 in doubles play and 8-7 in singles.

Men's tennis now moves on to the ITA Regionals Thursday, Oct.9, through Tuesday, Oct. 14, at the University of Alabama.
