JACKSONVILLE—What more could you want?
Two teams sitting at 5-0 in Conference USA, separated by just 86 miles, under the lights, on national television.
That's what it will look like at AmFirst Stadium tonight when the Gamecocks play host to Kennesaw State at 7 p.m. on ESPNU.
The last time two teams in Conference USA met and had unbeaten league records was on November 17, 2012 when UCF played Tulsa.
Jax State has found a way to win three one-possession games in its last four contests, getting go-ahead field goals in the final 4:30 with two coming in the final 60 seconds.
Following the win at UTEP, coach
Charles Kelly referred to this final stretch of games as "Amen Corner" in reference to three holes at The Masters where players deal with different wind conditions and having to navigate around Rae's Creek. "If you want to win The Masters, you have to play Amen Corner," said Kelly.
The 11
th hole at August for Jax State is Kennesaw State which is sitting at 7-2 with its only losses coming by one at Wake Forest and at No. 2 Indiana. The Owls and Notre Dame are the first two teams since 2016 to rattle off seven straight wins after an 0-2 start to the season.
Consistency and success in the trenches has been key for Kennesaw State with the Owls rolling out the same starting five in eight of their nine games. Guard JT Pennington has twice been selected as the Conference USA Lineman of the Week and tackle Jadarious Lee has also been a lineman of the week.
That group has protected quarterbacks Amari Odom and Dexter Williams II who have combined for over 1,900 passing yards and 13 touchdowns.
On defense, Elijah Hill and Tylon Dunlap both rank in the top three in the league in sacks. Hill leads the conference with 6.5 and Dunlap has racked up four.
This is the sixth meeting all time between the teams. The Owls leads the series 3-2.
