BIRMINGHAM, Ala. –
Charlie Penman won the UTR Sports College Circuit Championship hosted by Samford this past weekend. The event took place on Nov. 14-16.
Penman clinched the championship on Nov. 16 against Santiago Arredondo Delgado in three sets. Penman took the first set 6-2 before Delgado tied the match with a 6-3 win in the second. Penman won a tightly contested third set by a score of 1-0 (10-8) to win the event.
Penman opened the event with a straight-set win over Quint Freeman in the Round of 32 on Nov. 14. Penman won his Round of 16 in straight sets as well against Dan Richardson to qualify for the quarterfinals.
In the quarterfinals on Nov. 15, Penman won the first set 7-6 (9-7) against Vitorio Sardinha. Penman clinched the match with an impressive 6-1 win to move on to the semifinals.
Prior to winning the championship, Penman had to down Alexander Despoja in the semifinal round also on Nov. 16. Despoja won the first set 6-4 before Penman responded with a 6-1 second set victory. Penman took the third set 1-0 (10-5) to make it to the finals.
Penman and the men's tennis team is gearing up for the 2026 Spring season.
