Barnes, Carvalho Lift Gamecocks Past New Orleans

NEW ORLEANS – Jax State forwards Mya Barnes and Vitoria Carvalho each finished Saturday with career-highs in points as Jax State defeated New Orleans Privateers 65-62.

Barnes finished with a career-high 22 points as Carvalho set new career best marks in points with 12 and rebounds with 13. Barnes shot 8-for-13 from the field and 4-for-7 from three, also knocking down a pair of free throws.

Despite New Orleans (0-5) outscoring Jax State 28-17 in the final frame, Jax State (2-3) secured the wire-to-wire victory, boasting the lead for 38 minutes and 50 seconds.

The Gamecocks jumped ahead early, taking an 18-10 lead in the first quarter. The Privateers pushed back in the second quarter, outscoring Jax State 14-11, but the Gamecocks still managed a 29-24 advantage at the halftime break.

Barnes led the way with 12 first half points on 5-of-6 shooting while Carvalho added six points and six rebounds, leading the Gamecocks.

Barnes tacked on eight more points in the third quarter, giving her 20 points through 30 minutes and helping Jax State push its lead out to 48-34 entering the fourth quarter.

New Orleans threatened in the fourth quarter, finishing the game on a 12-5 run and hitting a shot at the buzzer to make the final margin 65-62 Jax State. The win serves as Jax State's first road victory of the season.

Jax State's largest lead of the game came with 7:08 remaining in the game, with the Gamecocks sitting ahead 56-40.

Shanihy Brown led New Orleans with 20 points, also adding a team-best three assists.

The Gamecocks outrebounded UNO 42-40, including a 28-22 advantage on the defensive glass.

Kyera Thornsbury led the Gamecocks with seven assists in the contest. Maria Sanchez-Ponce finished with nine points and seven boards.
