JACKSONVILLE – Jacksonville State women's basketball dominated LaGrange College Monday morning 92-35 in the team's 2025-26 season opener. The Gamecocks held LaGrange under 20 points until midway through the third quarter as they overpowered the Panthers on both the offensive and defensive side of the ball.
 
The Gamecocks had four players reach double-figures in scoring. Maria Sánchez-Ponce led the way with 16 points and tied for a team-leading seven rebounds, Maša Buzic scored 15 on 4-6 from three-point range, Mina Djurdjevic added 11 points, and Eden Sample scored 10.
 
Jax State was efficient putting the ball through the net as they went 52.3% from the field and 41.4% from three. The Gamecocks also outrebounded the Panthers 41-22, including 15 offensive boards to LaGrange's five.
 
Mya Barnes and Vitória Carvalho tied with Ponce with seven rebounds. Barnes scored eight points, while Carvalho had five. Kyera Thornsbury had a career-high eight assists to go along with seven points, two rebounds, and two steals.
 
In the opening period, Jax State outscored LaGrange 18-5 to start the game on a strong note. In the second quarter, Jax State went on an 11-0 run with around two minutes remaining before ending the first-half up 37-14.  
 
By the end of the third quarter, the Gamecocks were leading 63-22 thanks to a Djurdjevic made three. The Gamecocks went up 50 in the fourth quarter after a made three from Thornsbury made it 82-32. Jax State stretched their lead to 92-35 with 43 seconds remaining after a fastbreak layup from Djurdjevic found the bottom of the net.
 
Jax State moves on to face North Alabama Monday, Nov. 10, on the road.
