Women's Basketball Heads To Rival UNA Monday

FLORENCE, Ala. – Jax State women's basketball is set to face in-state rival North Alabama Monday night at 6 p.m. in Florence, Ala. The Gamecocks are coming off a dominate 92-35 win over LaGrange on Monday, Nov. 3, in the season opener.

Last Time Out
The Gamecocks are 1-0 after a dominate 92-35 win over LaGrange College on Monday, Nov. 3 at home. Jax State shot 52.3% from the field and 41.4% from three against the Panthers. Jax State also grabbed 41 rebounds, passed for 18 assists, and forced 15 turnovers against in the win.
Balanced Attack
The Gamecocks had four players score in double figures against LaGrange. Maria Sanchez-Ponce had a team-high 16 points against LaGrange. Masa Buzic added 15 points, Mina Djurdjevic had 11 points, and Eden Sample scored 10. Sanchez-Ponce, Mya Barnes, and Vitoria Carvalho all tied for a team-best seven rebounds against the Panthers. Kyeara Thornsbury had a team-best eight assists on zero turnovers.
Thornsbury Dishes Dimes
Sophomore guard Kyera Thornsbury is one of seven players in all of Division I so far this season with at least eight assists and zero thurnovers. Last season, Thornsbury finished the year with just 24 assists and 21 turnovers before opening up the 2025-26 campaign with an eight assist performance against LaGrange on Nov. 3.
New Faces Stepping Up
In the season opening win, plenty of new faces stepped up and showed out for Jax State. Masa Buzic scored 15 poitns on 4-6 shooting from the field and three, Mina Djurdjevic scored 11 points, and Vitoria Carvalho tied for a team-high seven rebounds.
Barnes Preseason Honors
Senior forward Mya Barnes was selected to the 2025-26 Preseason All-CUSA Team. Barnes averaged 7.3 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 1.2 blocks on 27.8 minutes per game last season. Barnes' 1.2 blocks per game and 35 total blocks ranked her fifth in the league in both categories last season.
Renewing a Rivalry
The Gamecocks and Lions are playing for the 31st time in the two programs' history. The Gamecocks hold a 17-13 all-time record against UNA. JSU is 11-5 in Jacksonville, while UNA has an 8-6 record in Florence. The Gamecocks are currently on a five-game winning streak against the Lions. Jax State won the last meeting on Jan. 28, 2023, inside Pete Mathews Coliseum by a score of 60-50.
