JACKSONVILLE – Jax State women's basketball road a stingy defensive performance en route to a 60-35 victory over Brewton-Parker Tuesday inside Pete Mathews Coliseum.
While the Gamecocks' offense did not have their best night, the defense held Brewton-Parker to a 12-of-56 shooting performance and a 4-of-27 three-point shooting outing. Meanwhile, Jax State shot 23-of-70 and knocked down six threes.
Makala Hobdy led the Jax State offense with 14 points. Hobdy and
Mya Barnes both had a double-double in the win with both players grabbing 10 rebounds. Barnes scored 12 points.
The game is the second consecutive double-double for Barnes who had a 12-point, 13 rebound performance against Mercer on Dec. 6. The back-to-back double-doubles from Barnes is the first time a Gamecock has had multiple games in a row with a double-double since Kennedy Gavin in the 2021-22 season.
Gavin scored 16 and grabbed 13 rebounds against South Carolina State on Nov. 27, 2021, and when she poured in 14 points and pulled down 11 rebounds against Young Harris on Nov. 30, 2021.
In Tuesday's win,
Adriana Jones hit a layup late in the first to help the Gamecocks take a 21-11 lead into the second quarter. The second quarter saw both teams struggle to score but a made layup from Hobdy with 3:52 to go in the first-half was enough to help the home team carry a 28-16 lead into halftime.
Jax State went up by 20 in the third quarter with just over two minutes on the clock thanks to a Hobdy free throw.
Brooklyn McDaniel made a free throw with only two seconds left before the final quarter to extend Jax State's lead to 43-23.
A Hobdy made three and a layup from
Eden Sample made it 59-33 with only 1:10 in the game to give Jax State its largest lead of the game. McDaniel hit another free throw with 21 seconds left in the game to make it 60-35.
Jax State saw Sample score 10 points against the Barons, while McDaniel had nine points and nine rebounds.
Adriana Jones scored eight points. Six Gamecocks tied for a team-best two assists. Hobdy also tallied three steals in the contest.
Jax State moves on to end a three-game homestand against Point University on Saturday, Dec. 13 at 2:30 p.m.
