Bowling Leads Flyer Classic after Baker Play

LOCKPORT, Ill.—Jax State swept the first day of play at Lewis University's Flyer Classic on Friday with a 5-0 record and the highest pinfall total of the day.
 
The Gamecocks totaled 5,439 pins and have a 110-pin lead over Wichita State and 135 over North Carolina A&T which also went 5-0 on the day.
 
Third-ranked Jax State cruised to its first three wins of the day over Augustana (1,040-926), Quincy (1,150-594), and Aurora (1,062-954).
 
Jax State then faced top-ranked Nebraska, which won the first two games 200-193 and 213-210. In the third, the Gamecocks recorded seven consecutive strikes after picking up a two-pin spare, and single-pin spare to open the game to post a 258 to Nebraska's 184. The Cornhuskers held the edge in the fourth game with a 235-224 win. Jax State won the final game 199-183 for a 1,084-1,015 victory.
 
Second-ranked Vanderbilt was the final opponent, which had swept Jax State in the Prairie View A&M Invitational championship. The Commodores won the first game 214-206 but the Gamecocks answered with a 224-177 win to take the overall advantage. Vanderbilt won the third by a single pin (225-224), then took the series lead by 25 pins with a 258-193 victory in the fourth.
 
The Gamecocks again answered the bell and posted seven consecutive strikes to open the final game and came away with a 256-193 victory and took the match 1,103-1,067 to complete the unblemished day.
 
Traditional matches will take place Saturday morning beginning at 9:30.
