LOCKPORT, Ill.—Jax State had to rally back from a 3-1 deficit in the best-of-seven championship series at the Flyer Classic Sunday morning to win their third tournament of the season.
The Gamecocks started the day by downing Wichita State 4-2 in the battle of the top two seeds after 10 matches to earn a spot in the championship. In the fourth game, Jax State posted six consecutive strikes to come away with a 253-207 victory and take a 3-1 lead. After an eight-pin loss in the fifth, the Gamecocks were able to shake off two open frames to start the sixth for a 237-207 victory.
That victory sent Jax State to the final to face the only team that had defeated it this weekend in sixth-ranked North Carolina A&T.
After winning the first game 180-169, the Gamecocks dropped the next three to put the Aggies a victory away from the title.
Jax State did just enough in the 10
th frame of Game 5 to hold off a late charge and win 196-194. A lineup switch paid big dividends as the Gamecocks posted a pair of 245 games to come away with the 4-3 victory.
Emma Yoder was named the tournament most valuable player after a 235.2 average during yesterday's traditional play.
Dannielle Henderson also earned all-tournament honors by finishing second in the field with a 234.8 average.
Next weekend, the Gamecocks will travel to Jonesboro, Ark. For the Mid-Winter Invitational hosted by Arkansas State.
