JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Emma Elrod and
Kailey Martin each slugged a home run and combined for seven RBI's for the Gamecocks in a 7-1 victory over Jacksonville on Sunday. With the win, Jax State closes out the season opening River City Leadoff with a 3-2 record.
With the loss, Jacksonville falls to 2-3.
For the second time this weekend,
Emma Elrod tallied a first inning home run, this one to give the Gamecocks a 1-0 advantage over JU.
Martin, a freshman from Marietta, Ga., followed suit, claiming a solo shot of her own in the second inning. Martin's first career home run came on a center field shot.
Kat Carter started the day in the circle for the Gamecocks and would pick up her second victory of the season. Aside from an RBI double in the fourth inning, Carter shut down the JU offense, allowing just one earned run and striking out six batters.
The Gamecocks blew the game wide open in the seventh inning, erupting for a five-run showing. Elrod brought home a pair of runners with a single while Martin laced a bases-clearing double just two batters later.
Elrod finished her afternoon 2-for-4 with three RBI's while Martin closed out her debut weekend 2-for-4 with four RBI's.
