SMYRNA, Tenn.—Second-ranked Jacksonville State came through in a big way during Sunday's play at the Columbia 300 Music City Classic to finish second.
The Gamecocks had just a 13-pin lead over North Carolina A&T for fourth place in the team standings going into Sunday's final traditional match and posted 1,007 total pins in a win over Belmont Abbey to the 980 scored by NCAT in their win over Sam Houston to secure a chance to bowl at the top of the bracket.
Jax State then had to face host and top-seeded Vanderbilt with the winner going to the championship and loser to the third-place match. The Commodores took the first two matches of the best-of-seven Baker series 188-177 and 232-158. The Gamecocks bounced back with a 218-174 win in the third and a 216-201 win in the fourth to even the series. Vanderbilt came within a win by taking the fifth 221-200, but Jax State answered with its two best showings at 228 and 247 to head to the title game.
Jax State led Youngstown State 2-0 in the title match with 208-186 and 222-204 wins before the Penguins evened up the match with 230-157 and 205-202 wins. YSU won the fifth 216-195, but the Gamecocks forced a sixth with a 197-168 win. A 215-197 win by the Penguins clinched the match.
Jax State posted 5,148 total pins in Baker play, going 3-2 which snapped a 23-game win streak by the Gamecocks in Friday play. In traditional play, the Gamecocks were 4-2 overall led by freshman
Erin Klemencic's six-game total of 1,283 which was third-most in the field. Klemencic earned all-tournament team recognition with her 213.83 average, posting her best score of 267 in Sunday's match against Belmont Abbey.
Annalise Obryant and
Keira Magsam both posted 197.5 averages to help the Gamecocks.
Next up for the Gamecocks will be the Conference USA Championship which begins Wednesday at Colonial Lanes in Harahan, Louisiana.
