BIRMINGHAM – The Jax State softball team used a pair of no-doubt home runs to pull off the season sweep of the Samford Bulldogs on Wednesday. Jax State defeated Samford 5-2 in Jacksonville earlier this month.
The Gamecocks (21-12) snap their five-game losing skid with a dominant defeat of Samford (20-14) in Birmingham.
After a trio of scoreless innings,
Kailey Martin launched a three-run homer to open up the scoring int the fourth and give Jax State its first lead of the afternoon.
Aria Davis followed up in the fifth inning with her first career home run, a grand slam, to bust the game wide open.
After
Emma Elrod led off the inning with a double,
Amber Reed was hit by a pitch to set up Martin for her ninth homer of the season, the best mark on the team through 33 games.
Haleigh Cushingberry singled home
Ashley Phillips to cap off a four run fourth inning.
Jax State tacked on another run in the fifth when
Morgan Nowakowski came home to score on a wild pitch. The Gamecocks loaded the bases for Davis to step to the plate.
With a full count and two outs, Davis launched the seventh pitch of the at bat over the center field fence for her first career longball.
Kat Carter started the game in the circle for Jax State and tossed five scoreless innings, securing the run-rule victory with a strikeout in the fifth.
Carter allowed just three hits and one walk while striking out four batters.
Elrod and Nowakowski both tallied multiple hits in the contest. Despite the impressive showing from the returners, three freshmen in Martin, Cushingberry and Davis accounted for all eight of Jax State's RBI's.
The Gamecocks look to carry the momentum into this weekend's series against FIU, opening up on Friday, March 28 at 6 p.m.
