Ramenskaja Earns a Singles Win as UAB Beats Jax State

JACKSONVILLE – Jacksonville State women's tennis fell 4-1 Tuesday afternoon to in-state rival UAB at home. Junior Polina Ramenskaja shined in the loss as the lone Gamecock to record a victory in singles and give the Gamecocks a point on the board.

The Gamecocks' record now sits at 9-7 with the loss to the Blazers who improve to 14-6 on the season. The Blazers got the win thanks to taking the doubles point and gutting out some close singles matches on Jax State's home court.

Zuzana Pavelekova and Anna Syrova lost the first match to go final of the afternoon when Kristyna Damaskova and Nera Tesankic defeated them 6-1 on doubles court two. On court one, Ramenskaja and Ella Tuomela lost 6-3 to Vanessa Mellynchuk and Mackenzie White to give the Blazers an early 1-0 lead by taking the doubles point.

On court three, Irene Artigas and Aneka Patel were trailing Maria Paz Ospina and Enya Ratkic 5-4 when the doubles point was called leaving their match unfinished.

In singles, Patel was the first Gamecock to finish up on court six where she fell 6-1, 6-2 to Tesankic. Following Patel's result, Pavelekova lost 6-3, 6-1 on court three to Klara Kajabova. The Blazers led 3-0 and seemed ready to end the match early with a 4-0 sweep, but Ramenskaja came through on court five with a straight-set victory to keep the Gamecocks in it.

Ramenskaja took down UAB's Ratkic 6-2 in the first before winning the second set 6-3 to make it 3-1 UAB with three courts still in play. Mellynchuk clinched the match victory with her 6-1, 7-5 victory over Jax State's Lea Erenda on court two.

Syrova was competing with Damaskova in hard-fought match on singles court one before the match was called. Damaskova took the first set in tiebreakers 7-6 (7-4) over Syrova. Syrova responded by jumping ahead 5-2 in the second, but the match went unfinished.

Artigas was also in a close match on court four against White when the match was called. White took the opening set 6-2, but Artigas and White were deadlocked at 5-5 in the second when the match was left unfinished as the Blazers clinched the win.

Jax State now turns their attention to Kennesaw State who visits the Jax State Tennis Courts on Friday, April 11, for a 1 p.m. first-serve.
