LYNCHBURG, VA. – Jacksonville State women's tennis moves on to the quarterfinals of the Conference USA Tennis Championship thanks to a 4-0 sweep of Sam Houston on Wednesday morning.
The Gamecocks took the doubles point before
Anna Syrova clinched the match with her three-set triumph in the No. 1 slot over the Bearkats' Nayuma Subba.
In doubles,
Lea Erenda and
Polina Ramenskaja got the first win of the day with a 6-4 win over Subba and Aaliyah Hohmann on court one.
Irene Artigas and
Aneka Patel then claimed the doubles point for the Gamecocks with a 6-4 win of their own over Jacqueline Schnabel and Ella Fitcher on court three. Syrova and
Zuzana Pavelekova were trailing 5-4 to Christine Jevicky and Adithi Venkatakrishna when the doubles point was taken by the Red-and-White.
The first singles point came when
Ella Tuomela won by default in the No. 6 slot after a Sam Houston withdrawal. Artigas then put the Gamecocks ahead 3-0 with a pair of 6-3 victories over Hohmann in the No. 4 slot in the first and second sets.
Syrova then won 6-3 in the opening set against Subba before Subba took the second 6-2 to even the match at one set apiece. Syrova won the third set 6-2 granting the Gamecocks a spot in the quarterfinal round of the tournament.
Erenda lost the first set against Javicky 6-1 and then took the second set 6-4. Erenda trailed 4-3 when the match went unfinished. Pavelekova lost 7-5 in the first set to Venkatakrishna but was leading 5-3 in the second when the match was called. Finaly, Ramenskaja won the first set 6-4 over Fitcher in the No. 5 slot before falling 6-3 in the second. Ramenskaja was ahead 3-2 in the third before going unfinished.
The Gamecocks move on to face Middle Tennessee Thursday at 9 am central in the quarterfinal round of the CUSA Tournament. Links to watch the match on ESPN+ and live stats will be available at JaxStateSports.com.
