JACKSONVILLE – Jax State dominated Kennesaw State on Saturday, pulling off a 5-2 victory in game two of the series for the series victory. The Gamecocks defeated the Owls on Friday in a 9-7 come from behind victory to take the opener.
Jax State (26-17, 9-8 CUSA) moved ahead of .500 in conference play with its second consecutive win over Kennesaw State (10-33, 1-16 CUSA).
For the second day in a row, both teams tossed a scoreless first inning, this time before Jax State opened up the scoring in the second frame.
Makalyn Kyser walked to lead off the second frame before
Jaci Underwood tacked a double to put two runners in scoring position.
Aria Davis drove in a run with a single back up the middle before an
Ashley Phillips single loaded up the bases with just one out.
Haleigh Cushingberry scored a runner on a single up the middle before
Morgan Nowakowski added two more on a single through the right side of the infield.
Kyser led off the third inning with a solo home run to left field, giving the Gamecocks a 5-0 advantage. It is her third homer of the season, all coming in the last 10 games.
The Owls responded in the top of the fourth with a homer of their own when Ana Gore hit a two-run shot and cut the Gamecock to the lead.
Jaliyah Holmes shut down the Owls for the rest of the game and closed out her dominant outing with just four hits and two earned runs allowed across 7.0 innings. Holmes earned her sixth victory of the season with the complete game, striking out five and walking just three.
With her RBI single, Cushingberry extended her hitting streak to 11 games, tying
Emma Elrod for the longest streak by a Gamecock this season.
Jax State looks for the series sweep on Sunday at Jana McGinnis Field. The game is currently set for a 1 p.m. first pitch.
