Women’s Golf Leads CUSA Championship with 18 to Play

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla.—Jax State pushed its lead to six strokes during the second round of play at the World Golf Village Slammer and Squire Course on Tuesday during the second round of the Conference USA Women's Golf Championship.

The Gamecocks posted a two-over team score of 290 on Tuesday and are one over for the tournament. Western Kentucky is in second after posting team scores of 291 and 292 to sit at seven over for the tournament.

"They stepped up big time," said coach Robbie Fields of the team. "In a situation with the most pressure they've played under all year they were just rock steady."

Freshman Lara El Chaib posted red numbers for the second day in a row with a bogey-free 70 with a birdie on the Par 5 11th, and sunk a downhill putt on 18 to close the day with her second birdie.

"My irons were in sync today; I hit 17 greens and the one that I missed I was still putting," said El Chaib. "It was hitting it really close, the putts just didn't drop."

El Chaib is five-under for the tournament and is tied at the top of the overall leaderboard with New Mexico State's Emma Bunch.

"I don't know that I've walked a round of golf with the ball striking I saw from her today," said Fields of El Chaib. "She probably averaged 15 feet on her approach proximity, just nothing went in until the last hole."

Sophomore Rachel Camp was among the biggest movers of the day with an even-par 72 to go up nine spots to 13th place. Camp was two-under through nine holes and bounced back with a birdie on 14 after bogeys on two of the first three holes on the back nine.

"I had a good par save on the first hole which gave me some momentum," said Camp. "I had a pretty routine start of hitting the fairway, hitting the green, and two-putting, then got some birdies putts to finally drop."

Freshman Rebekka Stutley remains in the top 10 after a two-over 74, but closed with birdies on 16 and 17. Junior Ebby Somers also posted 74, carding a birdie on the Par 3 second and the Par 4 12th. Somers is currently 24th.

Senior Paula Perez Cubinas is 21st after a seven-over round of 79.

The Gamecocks will be in the last group off in tomorrow's final round starting at 8 a.m. Central Time. The final round can be viewed on ESPN+.

"The patience and the acceptance of not having to be perfect is going to be the ultimate key," said Fields. "Letting things go when we make mistakes because that's golf and that happens; if we can step up and forgive ourselves in those moments, then we'll be really happy tomorrow."
