ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla.—Jax State came up six shots short of their first conference championship since 2021, placing second at the Conference USA Women's Golf Championship at World Golf Village's Slammer & Squire course.
The Gamecocks were 12 over as a team in the final round to post a total of 877 (+13) for the 54-hole event. Western Kentucky claimed the team honors with an even-par round of 288 on Tuesday.
"It's a tough one to swallow after being in this position and not being able to capitalize," said coach Robbie Fields. "We did a great job yesterday, which is really exciting and encouraging for the future, but it's tough for them right now."
Freshman Lara El Chaib earned all-tournament honors with a 54-hole total of 212 (-4) with a one-over 73 during Tuesday's final round. El Chaib had 17 pars on the day and her 43 pars during the tournament to lead the field.
"She did such a great job striking the ball," said Fields of El Chaib. "Even when she missed, it wasn't far. She's bummed because she finally put together a really solid performance, and to fall short is just like we're all feeling as a team right now, and just let down."
Classmate Rebekka Stutley was 11th, finishing the tournament four-over with a three-over 75 in the final round. Stutley was tied for second in the field in pars with 39.
In her final round with the Gamecocks, Paula Perez Cubinas had the second-best round of the day on the roster with a two-over 74, finishing in 18th place at nine-over for the tournament.
Rachel Camp was 20th at +11 for the tournament with an 80 in the final round and Ebby Somers posted 79 to finish 27th at +14.
"We keep putting ourselves in this position: we're going to learn from it and get there," said Fields.
