MURFREESBORO, Tenn.—Jax State wrapped up the Conference USA Championship with an eighth-place finish, ending the championship with a highlight performance in the championship's final event.
The 4x400 Relay team of Emma Drinkard, Amber Bailey, Chidinma Margaretmary Agu, and Hailey Tucker took bronze with the second-best time in program history at 3:39.58. Tucker, a senior from Muscle Shoals, ran a 53.327 during the final leg and was able to get to the line just 26 hundredths of a second ahead of fourth-place UTEP to get on the podium.
"It's always an exciting event to end on," said coach Jeremy Provence of the 4x400. "They just brought the energy; from Emma just getting out and and giving us a chance in the first leg, to Haley holding it off there in the last 50 to 70 meters, it was a really big run."
The finish was especially sweet for Tucker, who was able to beat Loubna Benhadha of UTEP to the line after finishing second to her in the 400 Meter Hurdles. Tucker posted a time of 58.69 to take silver in the event, and added a fifth-place showing in the 100 Meter Hurdles in 13.98.
"Words can't describe just how incredibly proud we are as a staff of what she's been able to accomplish at her time here at Jax State," said Provence of Tucker. "Not only on the track, but just how she's affected the entire group. She's a gamer--she found a way to hold off the girl that had beat her about an hour earlier in the 400 hurdles. That's just the heart she has, she brings it every day to practice, every meet, and she affects her teammates in such a positive way."
The Gamecocks added five points in the 400 Meters with Agu placing sixth in 54.59 and Uduak Pius Udosoh taking seventh in 54.87.
Bethelhem Manzano Jimeno was seventh in the 1500 Meters in a time of 4:25.15 to add a pair of points to the team total.
In the 4x100 Relay, the Gamecocks posted a season-best time of 46.36 seconds to take three points with Jailah Loving, Drinkard, Kailey Lett, and Nicola Peters finishing in sixth.
The day started with a pair of solid performances in the Javelin, led by a personal best effort by Jadyn Bonds who saved her best for last. On her final throw in the finals, she posted a 42.36-meter toss to finish sixth in the event and post the sixth-best mark in program history. Lydia Seals added a point to the team total with an eighth-place finish with a best mark of 36.74 meters.
