HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Two first half goals by Jax State earned the Gamecocks a 2-0 victory over the Alabama A&M Bulldogs on Sunday afternoon in Huntsville, Alabama. The win makes Jax State's record 2-2-2 through six matches, while Alabama A&M drops to 1-5-0 on the year.
Jax State took an early lead in the fifth minute when a shot from Amelia Jacobs found the back of the net. Jacobs' goal was the first shot of the contest.
The second goal of the day came by way of an empty-net goal from Lara Aitken, who was assisted by Amanda Will. Will challenged the defenders and was able to pull the Bulldogs keeper from the net, allowing Aitken to score and put the Gamecocks up 2-0 before the break.
The Gamecocks came out aggressive in the match, putting up eight shots, seven of which were on goal, in the first 45 minutes of action. Emma Holmberg was able to record one save on Alabama A&M's lone shot on goal in the first half.
While neither side scored in the second half, the Gamecocks continued to apply pressure and take shots, recording seven more shots, two on goal, compared to A&M's two shots with one on goal. Holmberg recorded a second save in the second half of play.
In total, Jax State ended with a 15-4 (9-2) edge in shots, a 5-2 edge in corners, and committed less fouls (7-9) and offsides (1-4) than the Bulldogs.
The Gamecocks will play the next two matches at home, facing two more SWAC programs. Alcorn State visits the Jax State Soccer Complex on Friday, September 5, before Jackson State makes a visit on Sunday, September 7. The matches begin at 6 p.m. and 12 p.m., respectively.
