JACKSONVILLE, Ala. — Louise Featherstone scored in the 71st minute to propel the Gamecocks soccer team to not only its first home win of the season, but its first home victory in the Corey Smith era, with a 1-0 win over the Alcorn State Lady Braves.
Both the Gamecocks (3-2-2) and the Lady Braves (1-3-1) were evenly matched through the first half of play, with the Gamecocks holding a narrow lead in shots (5-4) and had two more corners than Alcorn (3-1). Emma Holmberg had a save recorded in the first, with the Lady Braves having none.
Both sides drew yellow cards early in the second half, with Raylin Dixon taking one in the 56th minute, then Mariana Ruiz Montoya earning one for the Lady Braves in the 60th minute.
It wasn't until the 71st minute when Emma Reeder slid past the left side of the box to send the ball towards Featherstone, who was able to take the ball to the right side of the Alcorn goalie and put the ball in the back corner of the goal, making the difference in the match.
Both side ended with 10 shots on the night, and Jax State had a narrow 4-3 advantage in corners. Holmberg collected a clean sheet with five saves in the contest.
