Offense Explodes in Second Half as Jax State Downs Jackson State, 2-1

JACKSONVILLE, Ala. — The Jax State soccer team scored two goals in the second half of play as part of an offensive barrage against the Jackson State Tigers on Sunday afternoon at the Jax State Soccer Complex. The Gamecocks improve to 4-2-2 on the season while the Tigers fall to 1-5-1.

Jackson State broke through early in the game with a 22nd minute goal from Ryan Hawthorn-Harper, and took that early 1-0 lead into the half. Both sides were fairly even on the offensive front, with the Gamecocks holding a narrow lead on shots (6-5), but the Tigers took more corners (2-1).

In the second half, Amelia Jacobs corralled a header from Louise Featherstone, who gave it to her after a long cross from Raegan Whitaker, to bury the ball in the bottom right corner of the net and tie the match at 1-1.

It was Alessia Donia in the 81st minute who put the Gamecocks ahead with a free kick just outside of the box, managing to get the ball of the far-left side of the goal where the keeper couldn't get to in time. The unassisted goal put the Gamecocks up for good late in the second half.

The match saw a total of seven yellow cards called on both sides, with the Gamecocks accounting for one and the Tigers accounting for six, including one on the bench of Jackson State.

Jax State put up 12 shots in the second half for a total of 18 shots in the game, which is the most by the Gamecocks since the season opener at West Georgia.

The Gamecocks ended with six corners to the Tigers' two.

Ella Holmberg collected two saves in the victory.

The Gamecocks will play the next three matches on the road, taking on Alabama State next Friday in Montgomery before heading to Georgia to take on Mercer in Macon on Sunday.
