Jax State Breaks Three School Records at Lenny Lyles Invitational

LOUISVILLE, Ken. — The Jax State track and field program hauled in 11 new additions to the program's all-time top ten list, including three new school records at the PNC Lenny Lyles Invitational on Friday and Saturday at the Norton Healthcare Sports & Learning Center.

"Great weekend for the team," head coach Jeremy Provence said. "The environment was awesome, and the competition was top-notch."

Kicking off the record shattering weekend was Claudia Marquez who broke the program record in the 800m, finishing in first place out of 76 competitors with a 2:10.84 time, and marking the 97th fastest time in the Division I indoor season so far.

Jax State's next two record-breakers came early on Saturday, as Cheyenne Hill took first place in the 60m hurdles prelims for the Gamecocks first event of the day with a time of 8.45 seconds which beat the school record by over three tenths of a second before re-breaking the record in the finals with an 8.43 second finish. Hill's performance is currently the 76th fastest in the Division I indoor season so far.

Additionally on Saturday, Viola Jepleting added to the tally by finishing the one mile in 4:53.63, finishing in 12th place out of 101 competitors. Jepleting claimed the top time in team history in the one mile and holds the record by nearly three seconds.

"Having three freshmen set school records as the same meet is exciting," Provence said. "Claudia, Cheyenne and Viola have tremendous upside. There are definitely things to work on, but one thing they do extremely well is show up and compete hard."

While the meet was highlighted by the numerous new program records, Jax State returned from Louisville with four more additions to the program's all-time top list on Friday and then seven more on Saturday.

The Gamecocks set the tone right out of the gate on Friday afternoon, as the 4000m Distance Medley unit of Maddyn Conn, Erin Foley, Maxima Majer and Viola Jepleting finished third place out of five schools with a time of 12:17.14, setting the 32nd fastest time in the Division I indoor season so far.

It wasn't long after the distance medley performance that Jax State tallied its first top-finish of the day, featuring Amber Bailey's first place showing in the B Division of the women's 400m, in which Bailey finished in 54.94 seconds, earning herself a new personal best, along with the NCAA's 82nd best time in the indoor season so far, the 76th best Division I time in indoor this season and the fourth-fastest time in program history.

"Amber's event win in the open 400 was great to see," Provence said. "Her development over the last six to eight months has been incredible. She is top tier in every way and the results speak for themselves."

Rounding out the top ten finishes through day one of the competition was Bailey once again, this time in the B Division of the women's 200m, in which the junior placed 10th with a time of 24.81.

Jax State saw a few more athletes achieve personal bests and program top tens throughout the day as well, including Amiyah Johnson's 25.20 seconds finish in the C Division of the women's 200m, earning the tenth fastest time in team history, along with Naum Kibiwott's 10:18.74 mark in the women's 3000m which is the eighth fastest time in program history.

Additionally, Chaci Whitfield picked up a personal record in the women's long jump with a distance of 5.26m (17-3.25).

"Chaci's weekend cannot go unnoticed," Provence said. "Similar to the sprint group, Coach Kean has made a significant different with our field events, and Chaci's development is a clear example of that."

Outside of the two new school records on Saturday, the Gamecocks had many more stellar performances on day two of competition.

Johnson and Mercy Jebet both picked up the third best times in program history during their respective events. Johnson ran the 60m in 7.60 seconds and finished in 14th place, while Jebet ran the 5000m in 17:38.40 and finished in ninth place.

"Amiyah also had a great weekend, setting double PR's in the 60m and the 200m," Provence said. "Overall, Coach Osborne has done a fantastic job with the spring and hurdle group."

Jax State's grouping for the 4x400m also reached the record books, as Emma Drinkard, Erin Foley, Marquez and Bailey finished in 3:48.18 for an 11th place finish and the 6th fastest time in school history.

Alongside Jepleting's record-breaking mile run, Faith Kurgoi picked up the 7th fastest time in program history with a 5:08.73 mark. Maddyn Conn picked up a personal best in the event as well, running her mile in 5:15.84.

Rounding out the program top tens was Theresa Lukas who competed in the triple jump and achieved an 11.30m (37-1.00) distance for a personal best and the 10th longest time in program history.

Overall, Jax State racked up six top ten finishes in the meet, including four top-five finishes during the weekend.

Next up, the Gamecocks won't have to travel far as the squad takes a trip to Birmingham for the UAB Blazer Indoor meet on Friday, Feb. 6.
